Last afternoon Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed a baby boy. Princess Charlotte and her big brother Prince George will need to get used to sharing the parents’ attention with their new brother!
The day was special for Princess Charlotte in other ways too. According to the Succession to Crown Act, signed in 2013, she becomes the first female royal to retain her position in the line to British throne. It is a truly historical event.
The act states the following: “In determining the succession to the Crown, the gender of a person born after 28 October 2011 does not give that person, or that person’s descendants, precedence over any other person (whenever born).”
Otherwise, Princess Charlotte would have been bumped down after the birth of her baby brother. The new arrival would have taken her position.
The newborn prince thus becomes fifth in the line to the throne, moving down his uncle, Prince Harry, to sixth place. Prince Andrew, Princess Beatrice, and Prince Eugenie all move one step down as well.
