Pathé UK, a production company, started shooting a Judy Garland biopic in London this Monday. Oscar-winner Renée Zellweger has got the title role of the legendary MGM star. The upcoming picture also involves such actors as Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) as Bernard Delfont, and Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) as Mickey Deans, Garland’s fifth husband.
To celebrate the start of the project, Pathé UK released first photos of Renée as Judy Garland. The resemblance with the original pictures of the diva taken in the 1960s is startling!
There are not many details known on the upcoming film, but some information is already available.
A significant part of the film is centered around the end of the star’s life and her performances held in London in 1960s.
In the movie, we will hear some of Garland’s most popular songs (such as ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’).
It is also known that the biopic is being directed by a reputable English theater director, Rupert Goold (a good send-off was given to his latest movie King Charles III), and the script was written by Tom Edge, famous for such works as Lovesick and The Crown.
About 10 years ago there was an attempt to get to the big screen a biopic based on Gerald Clarke’s biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland, featuring Anne Hathaway, but the film was never released.
Judy Garland remains a household name. It is an example of fantastic success, growing from a two-year-old girl singing ‘Jingle Bells’ with her sisters to a legendary Hollywood star, and then perishing due to drug use.
