How Charlize Theron Gained 50 Pounds!

When we think of Charlize Theron, we think of the stunning model and actress who always looks as if she’s just stepped off of the runway. But she’s no stranger to being committed to a role – just like she has done for her new film ‘Tully‘.

To play the role of overwhelmed mother, Marlo, the actress had to go on a diet that ensured that she gained weight – and she did – 50 pounds to be exact. She said that she wanted to ‘feel what this woman felt’ and that by doing this style of method acting, she could get closer to her and portray her more accurately. However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for the actress as she said that while she was gaining weight, she suffered from depression. She said that this was due to consuming too much processed food and drinking too many sugary drinks. Not only did this make her feel depressed by herself, she said that she felt miserable on set because of what the diet was doing to her.


She couldn’t stop, either. To ensure that she maintained the excess weight, she would eat constantly throughout the day. Charlize stated that she felt like eating was a job. She even went to the extent of setting an alarm so that she could get up and have a midnight snack. She would wake up at two in the morning and eat mac and cheese. While that sounds like some people’s snacking dream, it was more like her nightmare.

But once the movie was over, the next stage in her journey was losing that weight again.

I was worried. I was like, this is taking a really long time,” she said. “Because on ‘Monster,’ I just didn’t snack for five days and I was fine. You know your body at 27 is a little different than your body at 43, and my doctor made sure to make me very aware of that. Like, you are 42, calm down, you’re not dying, all good.

Talk about being committed to a role. Let’s hope it pays off on screen.
